Dunedin Archery Club

Beginner’s Courses

Dunedin Archery Club runs beginner's courses which last six weeks at a cost of $70.00. These are run by qualified coaches with often as many as four coaches to six learners. Spaces are limited - please enquire via the Contact page. Please note that due to the poundage of our learner bows we have a minimum age limit of 10 years.

On completion of one of our learner's courses new archers are encouraged to practise at our learner sessions held every Saturday from 11.00am. These sessions are attended by a number of experienced coaches who maintain a safe shooting environment and give advice as required.

The club has been successful in obtaining two grants for The Community Trust of Otago and The Community Trust of New Zealand that has enabled us to buy some new equipment for novice archers.

We have been aware for some time that the current gear is great for beginners but that it is not really suitable for shooting at distances beyond 20m. We are also aware that  buying a better bow etc can be expensive and is a big commitment. For this reason we have decided that if a junior novice archer is good enough to qualify at 20m then we will provide them with a set of intermediate gear that will be more suitable for shooting longer distances.

There will be no charge for this new gear but junior archers will be expected to join the club if they wish to have access to it. We are making a commitment to the archer by providing higher quality gear so they can continue their progress and expect the archer to make a similar commitment to the club.

Here is an outline of how we see the scheme working:

The junior archer qualifies at 20m (qualifying score is 200), they then join the club and will be provided with a new bow, arrows, quiver, sight, stabiliser, stand and tab.

The archer will have exclusive use of the gear throughout the year.

The gear is not to be taken away from the archery club except to tournaments. There will be a secure place in the clubhouse provided to keep the gear.

The club will provide carrying cases if anyone is going to a tournament outside Dunedin.

The archer may continue on this scheme as long as they wish, although it is expected that at some stage they will wish to buy their own.

If you have any questions about this scheme don’t hesitate to ask one of the committee members about how it will work.
